It’s time to give yourself a pay rise.
I know how hard that can be, so I’m going to tell you how to do it (for free).
By signing up, in addition to access to the Raise your Rates Challenge, on completion, you’ll also receive my weekly newsletter full of pricing tips and tricks.
To anyone who’s not a successful freelancer, struggling to get a pay rise when you are your own boss would seem insane. It’s pretty straightforward, isn’t it? Just… start charging more for what you do.
You and I both know that is just not that easy
First of all, you probably struggled to even come up with the pricing you have now.
It took a whole heap of industry research, trial and error, and sleepless nights to create some sort of fee structure. You don’t want to be underpaid, but also don’t want to price yourself out of the market and lose potential work. In the beginning, it felt a whole lot like you should take whatever jobs were on offer.
Maybe you still feel this way now.
Next comes the common enemy of all freelancers; impostor syndrome.
You wonder if you’re even worth what you’re charging at the moment, and you live in fear that eventually, someone is going to expose you as the fraud you think you are. It doesn’t matter that the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that you’re sensational at what you do, your brain seems determined to find more evidence that you’re not. Every time you toy with the idea of raising your rates, that voice comes back and tells you that you’re barely worth what you charge now.
Then there’s figuring out how to calculate your value.
Should you be operating off an hourly rate? Why/why not? Is your time the only variable in pricing, or are there are things you can factor in to beef up the price a bit?
Finally, there’s the crippling fear that if you raise your rates, you’ll start losing clients, and potential new ones will be turned off by your fees.
“Jaz! You’ve perfectly articulated all my feelings! Are you a sorcerer who can read minds?” I hear you say.
Unfortunately, no.
I’ve been where you are. I’m now going on 14 years as a creative freelancer, and I know how hard it is to be confident and successfully charge your value. I saw this problem not only with myself, but with my friends and students.
That’s why I set out to become the Pricing Queen.
There’s a lot of psychology behind pricing, which is why you willingly paid $13 for that chunk of fancy cheese that one time. While I’m not going to dive into it now, I am going to share a secret that I’ve learned along the way.
Knowing how to raise your rates (and how to do it confidently) unlocks some truly incredible things.
Not only do you earn more because you’re charging more, you establish your place in the market and jump up another level in your success.
You attract and only work with the right clients; the ones who trust your expertise, reply to emails promptly, fill out the brief comprehensively, and don’t bat an eye over your rates. Word spreads and suddenly, you love your job a whole lot more.
