Chefs Notes
When I started as a designer, fresh out of my Adv Diploma in Design and Advertising, I planned to work in studios forever. Instead, my path through various studios (Rolex, Officeworks, Uniqlo) gave me building blocks that only made sense once I went freelance.
The most difficult ingredients to source are the mindset shift and courage to charge what you’re worth. Most freelancers have the skills but lack these two essential elements.
This recipe has helped me build a creative business on track for $300K with a 76% profit margin and no staff (unless you count my dachshund, Chorizo).
Best enjoyed with strong boundaries and regular time off. Less thinking, more doing—that’s where the money is!

My Method to Six Figures as a Freelancer
Step 1 | Start with the foundation: Mindset shift.
Transform from employee mindset waiting for assignments to business owner who identifies and solves problems. This is the crucial first step that makes everything else possible. Without this, your soufflé will never rise.
Psst, my Money Hungry Mindset FREE Workshop helps with this…
Step 2 | Mix in your value-based pricing strategy.
Increase your rates (I went from $75/hour and worked up to my current rate, $220/hour) and stop only quoting hourly. Hourly pricing turns clients into watchdogs and puts a ceiling on your income. Remember: For others to value your time more, you need to value it first.
Step 3 | Filter out cheaper clients.
Let go of clients you attracted in your cheaper days who don’t value your magic. This creates space for premium clients who appreciate your expertise. I’m not the only designer in the market, and neither are you—they’ll find someone else who suits them. It’s not about more clients, its about finding the ones who are hungry and worth feeding them your genius.
Step 4 | Identify your most profitable market.
My clients were once a mixed bag—weddings, corporate, small businesses, big corporations—creating an identity crisis. Focus on what makes you marketable and profitable. I didn’t niche to a single ideal client (despite what everyone tells you), but I got clear on what problems I solve best and for whom. I chose the right problems to solve for the right clients so they could choose me.
Step 5 | Position yourself as a problem-solver.
I’ve always called myself a creative problem-solver. It was my badge of honor. Find the specific problems your most profitable clients have and develop solutions. Articulate this throughout your positioning so clients know exactly what to recommend you for. People pay for problems to go away, not for skills that sell.
Step 6 | Diversify your payment structures.
Change how you price your services (you can check out the 14 ways you can here). I created multiple revenue streams without opening an Etsy store or clothing line, simply by diversifying how I charged for my expertise. This also helped with feast-or-famine feelings when quieter months felt like the end of the world.
Step 7 | Create flexible payment options.
Not every client has the same cash flow challenges. Some need payment plans, others prefer retainers, while some are better suited to project rates. Find ways to help clients afford you without lowering your rates. I’ve had clients who would freak out at a $10K invoice but were comfortable with alternative payment structures.

When it comes to invoicing and taking payments, I use Freshbooks. I can offer retainers, track my hours, create one-click acceptance on estimates to convert to invoices and even set up payment plans and check out links. Grab two months FREE here
Step 8 | Establish minimum engagement levels.
Set the lowest amount you’ll accept for a project and stick to it most of the time. When you consider dipping below, have clear justification. Leave emotion at the door, your business cannot run on exposure and good vibes.
Step 9 | Nurture relationships with your best clients.
Build strong connections with your best customers. When they see your value, they’ll invest in you repeatedly and tell others you’re “expensive but worth it.” This organic referral system beats cold outreach every time.
Step 10 | Outsource what you hate.
Bookkeeping was never my strong suit and came with weird guilt. Identify tasks that drain you and outsource them, focusing instead on what’s profitable enough to warrant your time and energy.
Step 11 | Streamline your “Curious to Client” process.
Create a clear pathway for prospective clients from first contact to project completion. I automated parts of this without losing the human touch, which significantly built trust with new clients.
Step 12 | Invest in your growth.
Continuously upskill (not just in software and skills, but in the business side too) and invest in your future success through courses, research, coaching, and personal development. This helps you see yourself as the successful, valuable creative you are and work toward funding Future Freelance You.
