No more chickening out, ok?
Many freelancers have issues with the whole “asking for more money” thing.
Which is a bummer, because my favourite type of money is “more.”
Becoming skilled in the art of negotiation is one of the most valuable things a freelancer can develop, especially when landing those bigger clients.
An easy mistake to make is thinking negotiation means discounting or an auction… it doesn’t.
Say you’ve had a client come to you with the perfect brief, something that you immediately want to say yes to and that ticks all the boxes… except for one.
Creative freedom – Tick
In your niche of expertise – Tick
Kind of work you love to do – Tick
Budget… yeah… not quite.
Your first thought:
“I really want this project, it’s made for me! But they’ve said I’m too expensive… so clearly I need to just drop the price, right?”
But deep down, that feels pretty shit, because you know theres a difference between what you wanted to charge and what they’re willing to pay and you’re losing out.
You know that if you were better at negotiating, you could…
…communicate confidently with clients about what you want and need, arriving at that yes sooner.
…charge more for your skills and be confident that you’ll land the job, and the price, that works for you.
…make the times you do choose to negotiate worth it, because you know what’s worth negotiating on.
So how do you use negotiation to turn that sour ‘no’ into a sweet ‘yes’?
